"I GOT BACK FROM A TRIP TO NEW YORK AND WAS EDITING SOME IMAGES ON MY IPAD. I WAS USING AN APPLE PENCIL TO EDIT PART OF THE PHOTO, I JUST STARTED DOODLING ON IT. FROM THERE I JUST KEPT EXPERIMENTING WITH IT."

WHAT IS YOUR PHOTOGRAPHIC & ILLUSTRATIVE STYLE?

For illustration a bit of everything really! It depends on what I’m working on so it can be anything from the photo-doodles, illustrated portraits to landscape work.

My photography style is quite simple, these days I try to look at scenes that would make good outcomes for drawing on.

HOW DID YOU COME ABOUT MIXING PHOTOGRAPHY & ILLUSTRATION TOGETHER?

By accident really. I got back from a trip to New York and was editing some images on my ipad. I was using an Apple Pencil to edit part of the photo and I just started doodling on it. From there I just kept going and experimenting with it.

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY & ILLUSTRATION?

Mostly film, tv and music. There’s usually a reference to something from pop culture in my work, even if it’s really subtle.

Photography-wise, people like Jason Kummerfeldt, Caleb Knueven are really inspiring for gaining interest in film work. The work of Wes Anderson inspires me too. My work is nothing like his style-wise but I love all the attention to detail, all the way to the little things.

DO YOU PREFER TO SHOOT ON FILM OR DIGITAL?

At the moment I prefer shooting film but I do shoot digital as well. Film is more fun, and the anticipation of what the work will turn out like is really exciting. Digital has its place and that’s fun too! Although, I can end up shooting too much and it gets a bit boring going through 100 photos of the same scene. Film helps me to not get too trigger happy with the shutter!

WHEN AND HOW DID YOU GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHY & ILLUSTRATION?

Growing up in the 90's all you could shoot was film. I loved using disposable cameras and I also had a tiny APS film Canon Ixus that my parents gave me to take on a school trip. I took it everywhere with me, those advantix canisters felt like the future at the time!

For illustration I was always into art from an early age and just kept studying it at school. I loved reading comics and watching cartoons like The Simpsons, Futurama and all the Cartoon Network ones back in the 90's.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT FILM PHOTOGRAPHY & ILLUSTRATION?

Film is so much fun, and once that canister is loaded you’re locked in - no changing ISO, white balance settings, filters or anything like that. It makes it more simple and purposeful. Sometimes people see you out and about with an old film camera and talk to you about their experiences with film, that doesn’t really happen with digital.

Illustration is rewarding in the way it stretches your imagination to keep pushing for new ideas and solutions. Sometimes you get a creative block and once you work your way through it, it’s such a great feeling.
